| Queen's Hall Glazing Is
Smashing A Window on "The Space"
When is a space not "The Space"? When it's not glazed...
Back in the 60s, when the Queen’s Hall was built, it was decided to
leave a space underneath, partly so that cars and delivery vans could pull
right up to the Queen’s Hall doors to facilitate transferring good and
equipment to and from the Hall, and partly so that the original facade and
clock tower were still visible from the Amersham Road.
This was all very well at the time, but in more recent years it was
realised that this was a waste of precious space. The Headmaster and
Governors therefore decided to glass in this area, providing extra indoor
space for various functions, exhibitions and even classes. As it
incorporated such a vast space, what better name for it than “The Space”.
This was carefully planned and completed during the summer of 2005. The cost
was £40,000, which the PA is paying over a 5 year period.
The Space has concertina doors, which still allows vehicular access to
the Hall when necessary. It was very quickly realised just how useful The
Space was going to be. It has already been used for several functions, both
school and external (including the Art Day Workshop, pictured left), allowing overflow from the Queen’s Hall and for various
exhibitions. External rental of the Queen’s Hall during the summer holidays
provides a very welcome contribution to school funds and The Space has
largely increased rental possibilities for the future. It has also made a
significant difference to the efficiency of the heating in the Queen’s Hall
area and the Junior Block. We would like to think that people will look back
5 years from now and wonder how the school ever managed without it.
